Our Big Charity Week 2-6 March 2015
Izzie O'Riordan -
The Big Charity Week is ABTA LifeLine’s main fundraising and awareness week that encourages ABTA members and partners to get together, host a fun and exciting event, and raise money in the process.
For us, the week is about bringing our industry together and raising awareness and funds for our colleagues who are in serious financial need. If everyone gave just £1, those pounds together would make a huge difference.
Take Mia, a former travel agent with Co-operative Travel who ABTA LifeLine helped a couple of years ago. Aged just 21, Mia suffered a stroke that left her with locked-in syndrome, unable to use her arms and legs, or to speak, but still in control of her mental faculties. ABTA LifeLine helped fund a customised car which meant she could leave hospital and start to regain her independence, something that, until then, the stroke had taken away. Click here to read TTG’s catch up with Mia and find out what she has been up to with LifeLine’s help over the past few years.
This year we wanted an even simpler way for people to get involved in the week so we partnered up with TTG to launch a social media challenge.
The idea was for individuals and companies to fold, pimp and fly a paper plane. Then take pictures of it, film it, tweet it and post it on Facebook and donate just £3 by texting TBCW15 £3 to 70070.
We saw some fantastic creations and whether it was a long distance glider or a flamboyant flyer it was great to see ABTA members and partners getting behind the challenge. A huge thank you to Travel2, AITO, TTG, Superbreak, Meon Valley Travel, Kuoni, Amadeus, Sunvil and Shearings among others for their involvement!
As well as flying planes we had a number of other companies who organised their own events during the week. A special mention to Affordable Car Hire, who cycled the distance of the M25, Midcounties Co-operative who donned sparkly wigs and had their legs waxed, The Travel Roadies who dressed up and collected donations from travel shops, and Funways Holidays for their American themed fancy dress day, all in aid of ABTA LifeLine. Here at the ABTA offices we had great fun holding a pod plane challenge, playing Destination Bingo and feasting at a Come Dine with LifeLine lunch.
Thank you so much to everyone who got involved in our week. Whether you participated in an event, donated, or spread the word about the help that LifeLine can give, you have made a difference to our travel community.
